Summer has fully arrived and with it lots of mosquitoes!! But you might not want to run to the store and pick up a bottle of Bug Off. Most common bug repellants contain DEET or pyrethrin which has some hasty side affects!
“For pyrethrins: Breathing difficulty, Coughing, Loss of alertness due to imbalance in oxygen level, Tremors (if a large amount is swallowed), Seizures (if a large amount is swallowed), Upset stomach, Vomiting
For DEET: Persons applying DEET to their skin may get hives or have mild redness and irritation. These symptoms are usually mild and will go away when the product is removed from the skin.”
Making your own is really the best option: you avoid all the harmful side affects and get quality repellent for a very good price!
Mosquito Reppellant Recipe:
1 Cup Oil (like sweet almond, jojoba, etc.) or Witch Hazel or 1 Cup Vodka (vanilla infused works great).
Essential oil blend containing any of the following:
For bug repelling: Basil, Citronella , Purification (contains citronella), Eucalyptus, Lemon, or Tea Tree (Melaluca)
For pleasant fragrance (optional): Lavender , Peppermint, Joy, Lemongrass, or Ylang ylang
Mix base ingredients together in a bottle. For bottles with pump tops or squeeze tops I would recommend oil bases, for a bottle with a spray top use vodka or witch hazel.
After the base is combined mix in essential oils. 30 drops for 1/2 or 60 drops for 1 cups. Shake well to combined and enjoy you bug bite free summer!
I hope you enjoy this recipe and enjoy a summer away from the bugs!
